Lunatic Calm

Lunatic Calm was an electronic duo from London formed in 1996 by Simon Shackleton, later widely known as Elite Force, and Howard Saunders. Working at the intersection of big beat, industrial, and trip-hop, the pair earned lasting recognition for “Leave You Far Behind”, a track that achieved cult status through its inclusion in films such as The Matrix, Charlie’s Angels, and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, as well as in several video games. Their 1997 debut album, Metropol, deserved far more attention than it ultimately received. For many listeners, the group became remembered almost exclusively for one signature song, while the rest of the record remained unfairly overshadowed. That is especially unfortunate, because Metropol is far richer than its reputation suggests. Pieces like “Long Shadows” and “Meltdown” create a vivid image of a dark, restless metropolis, where cold atmosphere and mechanical rhythm merge into something cinematic and deeply immersive. Elsewhere, on tracks such as “Roll the Dice” and “The Sound”, the duo balances hard-hitting percussion with tense, charged vocals, giving the music both force and character. Even the brief opening fragment “Fuze” works perfectly, setting the tone from the very first seconds. What makes the album particularly rewarding is its sense of continuity. Each composition has its own identity, yet the record unfolds with a natural flow that encourages listening from start to finish in one sitting. Metropol remains a seriously underrated release and is highly recommended to anyone drawn to dark, slow-burning, and powerful electronic music.
