Monk & Canatella
Genre: Trip-Hop, Electronic, Breakbeat / Country: UK
Monk & Canatella were an experimental duo from Bristol, England, who emerged in the mid-1990s. In the city’s underground music scene, they became known for taking trip-hop in a rougher, more guitar-driven, and more independent direction than many of the genre’s better-known acts. Their first full-length release, Care in the Community, showcased a distinctive mix of trip-hop, breakbeat, and indie rock, helping establish the duo as an inventive presence within Bristol’s alternative sound. After signing with Telstar Records, they released Do Community Service. An interesting detail is that the album artwork is often considered one of the earliest commercial collaborations involving Banksy, long before the Bristol street artist achieved worldwide recognition.
