Towa, whose real name is Alex Elwaked, is a Romanian producer who has rapidly built a name for himself through viral Instagram reels and TikTok clips that helped introduce a wider audience to his sound. His music is especially associated with Memphis-inspired boom bap and phonk, delivered with a dark, memorable atmosphere that fits perfectly with short-form visual content. Although he only began officially releasing music in 2023, his profile rose sharply in 2024 and 2025 as his tracks started spreading across social media through meme-based videos and highly shareable edits. What makes Towa stand out is his ability to combine the raw mood of classic Memphis rap with the modern energy of contemporary phonk. His productions often feel gritty, hypnotic, and cinematic at the same time, which is one of the reasons they work so well in viral online formats. At the same time, he is not limited to one narrow direction. While hip-hop, Memphis rap, and phonk remain the core of his style, he has also explored more experimental territory, including projects influenced by retro-wave and other atmospheric electronic sounds. In 2024, Towa collaborated with Token on the track “Most Wanted,” further expanding his visibility. He is also known for working closely with underground artists rather than chasing purely mainstream exposure. Among the rappers connected with his music are Sadfriendd, Takeda, and other names from the darker side of the underground scene.
