A.N.I.M.A.L. are one of the most influential heavy bands to emerge from Argentina. Formed in Buenos Aires in the early 1990s and led by vocalist and guitarist Andrés Giménez, the group developed a forceful mixture of groove metal, thrash metal, hardcore and nu metal. Their name is an acronym for Acosados Nuestros Indios Murieron Al Luchar, reflecting a long-standing commitment to Indigenous rights, Latin American identity, social injustice and personal resistance.

The band introduced itself with the self-titled album A.N.I.M.A.L. in 1993, but its heavier identity became clearer on Fin de un Mundo Enfermo in 1994. Their breakthrough arrived with El Nuevo Camino del Hombre in 1996, an album that helped establish the group beyond Argentina and positioned them among the leading representatives of modern Latin American metal.

That momentum continued with Poder Latino in 1998. Produced by Max Cavalera, the album combined crushing guitar grooves with regional pride and a strong Spanish-language identity. It also featured notable musicians including Robert Trujillo, Christian Olde Wolbers and Jimmy DeGrasso. Instead of simply reproducing North American metal trends, A.N.I.M.A.L. transformed thrash, hardcore and alternative metal into a distinctly Latin American form.

The 1999 album Usa Toda Tu Fuerza expanded their international reach and included a guest appearance by Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister on a cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” Around this period, A.N.I.M.A.L. toured across Latin America, Europe and the United States, sharing stages with Pantera, Biohazard, Bad Religion, Suicidal Tendencies and Slipknot. Their participation in the 2000 Warped Tour further exposed Spanish-language heavy music to audiences outside the region.

With Animal 6 in 2001, the band pushed toward an even harsher and more metallic sound. Combativo followed in 2004, mixing their established groove metal foundation with years of touring experience and broader songwriting ideas. After seven studio albums, numerous international performances and a major influence on the regional scene, A.N.I.M.A.L. announced their separation in 2006. Their original run remains closely associated with the rise of Argentine groove metal and the wider Latin American nu metal movement.

The band officially returned in 2015 with Andrés Giménez, bassist Cristian “Titi” Lapolla and drummer Marcelo Castro. The reunion produced the live release Vivo en Red House, followed by the 2018 studio album Una Razón para Seguir. Rather than operating only as a nostalgia act, A.N.I.M.A.L. resumed touring across Argentina, Latin America and Europe while introducing their music to a younger generation.

In April 2025, the group released Legado, a seven-track album issued through Sony Music Entertainment Argentina. Featuring songs such as “Fraternidad,” “Sagrado,” “Puño Criminal” and “Culpables No Hay,” the record reconnects with the band’s raw rhythmic power and socially conscious character.

More than three decades after their formation, A.N.I.M.A.L. remain a defining name in Argentine and Latin American metal. Their combination of heavy grooves, Spanish lyrics, Indigenous awareness and regional pride helped prove that modern metal did not need to abandon local culture to reach an international audience.
