Dawan are an underground nu-metal band from Maipú, a district of Santiago, Chile. Active since the late 1990s, the group developed a distinctive sound that combined aggressive metal, hardcore energy and Latin American rhythms. Their debut album, 23.58:1, stands as the most important release in their discography and a notable document from Chile’s early-2000s aggro-metal scene. The original CD edition is catalogued as a 2004 release, although some retrospective sources associate the recording with an earlier date.

The name Dawan was created as a phonetic interpretation of “The One,” referring to Jesus. However, the musicians did not describe themselves simply as a Christian band. Instead, they presented Dawan as a group of believers making music influenced by Christian faith, personal conviction and everyday life in their community. Their earliest performances took place at free public events around Maipú, helping the band establish a close connection with local audiences.

23.58:1 contains eleven tracks, the album moves between heavy, rhythm-driven nu-metal and the more confrontational elements of hardcore and groove metal. Its Spanish-language lyrics focus on faith, struggle, spiritual resistance, social identity and the challenges faced by people living in working-class neighborhoods.

The original recording lineup included Juan Campos, Sergio Knionz, Mauricio Knionz, Gustavo and Matías León. Their approach mixed distorted guitars and forceful percussion with regional influences, giving the music a character that differed from the more polished American nu metal dominating the period. Dawan’s sound was closely tied to Chilean aggro metal: raw, socially aware and built for energetic live performances.

After several lineup changes and a temporary breakup, the Knionz brothers revived the project with new musicians, including former members of the rap-metal band Xtrim. Despite these changes, 23.58:1 remained the defining record associated with Dawan.

For listeners exploring forgotten Latin American nu-metal, Christian rap-metal and underground Chilean heavy music, 23.58:1 is a release worth rediscovering. Its combination of faith-driven lyrics, street-level realism, Latin rhythms and uncompromising metal energy gives Dawan a unique place within Chile’s alternative music history.
